Pixel art editor for sprites and GIF animation, with undo that stays saved
Dotsmith is a pixel art editor for sprites, icons and small animations, made so your work stays put: undo survives closing the app, and two fingers never leave stray lines on the canvas.
▶ UNDO THAT SURVIVES CLOSING THE APP
• Every stroke, fill, shape, move, layer or frame change is one undo step.
• The newest 100 steps are saved inside the project file, so Undo still works after you leave the canvas or close the app.
• Autosave runs about 2 seconds after you stop drawing.
• Deleted projects go to Trash and stay there until you delete them forever, with Undo right after you delete.
• Each project keeps up to 10 earlier versions; restoring one makes a copy.
▶ TWO FINGERS NEVER DRAW
• If a second finger lands within a quarter second, the stroke you started is removed and the touch becomes zoom and pan.
• Two separate strokes are never merged into one undo step.
• Tap with two fingers to undo, with three fingers to redo.
• When you stop pinching, the zoom settles on a whole number of screen pixels per cell, so every pixel is the same square.
▶ DRAWING TOOLS
• Pencil and eraser with brush sizes 1–4 px. Fast drags leave no gaps.
• Fill, line, rectangle and ellipse (outline or filled) and an eyedropper.
• Mirror drawing left–right, top–bottom or both ways.
• Select an area to move, flip, copy, cut, delete or paste it, also onto another frame or layer.
• Up to 8 layers with show/hide, lock, opacity, rename, duplicate, merge down and reorder.
▶ ANIMATION
• Up to 256 frames in a frame strip: add blank or duplicated frames and hold any frame ×1 to ×8.
• Frame rate 1–30 fps, loop and a full-screen preview.
• Onion skin shows up to 3 earlier frames in red and the next frame in green. It is never exported.
▶ EXPORT
• PNG at ×1 to ×32 (up to 4096 px), with optional grid lines from ×4.
• Sprite sheets as a grid, row or column, with padding and optional frame data (.json).
• Animated GIF at ×1 to ×8 (up to 1024 px).
• Nearest-neighbour scaling keeps every pixel sharp, with no blur.
• Save to Photos (Pictures folder) or share. The file is checked on disk before the app says it is saved.
▶ COLORS AND IMPORT
• Preset palettes (Default 32, Gray 8, Pastel 12, 1-bit), .hex and .gpl palette import, .gpl export, or a palette of 4 to 64 colors taken from an image.
• Turn a photo into pixel art: pick 16 to 128 px on the long side, fit or crop, then keep the colors, reduce them to 4–64 or match your palette.
• Enlarged pixel art (PNG, WebP, GIF or BMP up to 2048 px) is detected and can be opened at its true size.
• Canvas from 1 to 256 cells on each side, any width and height: 32 × 19 works too.
• Share a project file (.pxs), or back up the whole library to one .zip file and restore it later.
▶ GOOD TO KNOW
• Limits: canvas up to 256 × 256, up to 8 layers and 256 frames within a 32 MB pixel budget. The app tells you when another frame or layer would not fit.
• GIF holds up to 256 colors. Extra colors are merged, and partly transparent pixels become solid or clear.
• Up to 100 undo steps (8 MB) are saved with a project. Redo is not saved.
• Your projects are kept in the app and are not uploaded. Files leave the app when you save them to Photos or share them.
• Imported photos are processed on the device and are not stored; the project keeps the resulting pixels.
• On some older phones, the first save to Photos asks for storage access.
• Ads appear on the projects screen, and sometimes when you return to it after an export. Never on the canvas.
Novedades
Draw sprites frame by frame while Onion skin tints up to three earlier frames red and the next one green. Pixelate shrinks a photo to 16–128 cells on its long side, and Export hands you a PNG, a Sprite sheet or an animated GIF scaled without blur.
