Nuggeto Twist

A shallow pan, a little water and a heap of river grit. Somewhere in that mess sit a few heavy nuggets, and the only way to find them is to spin the slurry with your own finger. Drag in circles around the rim and the water begins to turn; keep turning it and the lightest material starts climbing the edge of the pan and tipping away over the lip. That is the whole craft of this puzzle, and it is more delicate than it sounds. The swirl-speed marker sits at the side of the pan with a narrow green band on it, and your job is to hold the spin inside that band. Stay in the green and the grey gravel and the flakes of pyrite ride up and out while the heavier nuggets work their way down into the centre of the pan, exactly as real panning behaves. Push the swirl too hard, though, and the water carries everything with it — the gold goes over the rim along with the rubbish, and you have washed away the very thing you came for. Drag too gently and the grit simply sits there while the wash timer counts down. So you learn to read the pan. A firm sweep to break up a thick load, then an easing off as the surface clears, then a few patient turns to coax the last stubborn pyrite flake towards the edge without disturbing the metal already resting in the middle. Every piece of grey stone and every bright, worthless speck of fool's gold has to be gone before the timer ends. Clear the pan and the nuggets are yours; leave one flake behind and the wash does not count. There are 25 pans to work through, and each one hands you a different load to sort — some heavy with coarse gravel that shifts in a hurry, others sprinkled with pyrite that looks so much like the real thing that you will catch yourself protecting it. The controls never change and never need explaining: one finger, moving in circles, faster or slower. Everything else is judgement, built up pan by pan until the right speed starts to feel obvious in your hand. It makes for a strangely calming sort of concentration. The water turns, the grit lifts and spills, the colour at the centre of the pan slowly becomes clearer, and you realise you have spent several quiet minutes doing nothing but watching a swirl and holding it steady.
