Le Pointeur

Le Pointeur is a pétanque game played the way it is in Provence: three steel boules, a jack already thrown, and gravel that never rolls the same way twice. You start at Place des Moulins in Marseille's Panier at five in the afternoon, plane trees overhead and Monsieur Paul in the circle. Pull back on the gravel to set the distance and the line, then let go. Point to roll a boule up close to the jack, or shoot to land right on a rival boule and knock it away. Stay where it stood and that's a carreau. Each square plays differently: worn ruts pull boules along, plane-tree roots kick them sideways, deep gravel swallows soft throws and a tilted ground drifts everything towards the harbour. Live weather from each town changes the game too. A mistral pushes high shots off line, and after rain the gravel rolls heavy. Work through four squares and four regulars with their own habits, from Marseille to Aix, Arles and the Jules Lenoir ground in La Ciotat, where pétanque started in 1910. A new défi every day, a carnet of every partie you've played and an apéro-hour reminder give you a reason to come back tomorrow.
