Meditation timer with soft bells, pranayama breathing and a sitting journal.
Achala is a quiet meditation timer: a place to sit each day, for dhyana, mindfulness or simply sitting still. Tap the circle, let a soft meditation bell begin the sitting, and rest. The screen fades to black while you sit, and a bell tells you when it is over, with the screen locked too.
A TIMER THAT STAYS OUT OF THE WAY
• Sit for 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 45 or 60 minutes, or any length you choose
• Or sit open-ended: the clock counts up quietly until you choose to stop
• An optional settling-in pause before the first bell, with Begin now to skip it
• Interval bells every 5 to 30 minutes, or one bell half-way, in the same bell or another
• Pause, resume, or end early, from the screen or from the notification; Back asks before it ends anything
• The screen dims to black after a few seconds, the time shown softly or hidden
• With the screen locked, the app rings the bells itself
• Save up to three favourite sittings as quick starts, one tap from Home; or Sit 10 or 20 min from the app's icon
• A gentle vibration at each bell if you like, and Do Not Disturb while you sit, if you choose
• Opened again within half an hour, Achala is where you left it; a sitting in progress always comes back
SOUNDS MADE IN THE APP
• Four bells: singing bowl, temple bell, tingsha and deep gong
• Gentle background sound if you like: rain, ocean, soft noise or a low drone
• Separate volumes for the bell and the background
GUIDED BREATHING AND PRANAYAMA
• A softly growing and shrinking circle to breathe with, and the words to follow
• Slow, even breathing at about five and a half breaths a minute, alternate-nostril breathing (nadi shodhana), the humming breath (bhramari), box breathing, 4-7-8 at seconds or a quicker count, or your own pattern
• Patterns that hold the breath say who should not, and holds are always optional
• A pacer for the breath, nothing more: Achala makes no health claims
A MEDITATION JOURNAL THAT KEEPS COUNT
• Every sitting is saved by itself: the day, the time, how long and what kind
• If you wish, note how you feel after, or before and after, on a simple five-point scale, and add a few words
• Hours, sittings, the days you sat in the last 30, this week day by day, your average sitting and the time of day you sit most
• A daily goal if you want one, shown as a ring that fills as you sit
• Charts of minutes each day, a calendar of the year, and how your own ratings compare over time
• Quiet milestones along the way: the first hour, a hundred sittings and, if you choose to count them, thirty days in a row
HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT
• How to sit, in six plain steps, for the first sitting or the hundredth
• What to do if a sitting unsettles you, and where to find someone to talk to
• The settings that keep bells and reminders on time, for your make of phone
WORDS TO SIT WITH
• Each day, a short verse from the Yoga Sūtras, the Bhagavad Gītā or the Upaniṣads, with its meaning, or a line from a classic writer
A DAILY REMINDER
• A gentle notification at the time you choose, or by the sunrise where you are, from Brahma muhurta to an hour after
• The phone rings it itself, even with the app closed; a test shows it reaches a locked phone
• It can stay quiet on days you have already sat
YOUR PRACTICE IS YOURS
• Works fully offline. No account is needed
• Sign in with Google or your email, if you wish, to keep your journal safe and the same on your phone and computer, and when you change your phone. One Dixith account signs you in to every other Dixith app too
• Save a copy, or download everything as a spreadsheet, at any time, and delete your account from inside the app
• Nothing is sold or shared. Google Analytics counts which screens are opened, never your sittings, notes or email
• In English, Kannada (ಕನ್ನಡ) and Hindi (हिन्दी). Light and dark themes, each made for its hour, in three colours, and text that can be made large
Achala means still, unmoving, like a mountain. May your sitting be steady.
