Long after closing, an old library keeps one lamp lit. The night porter leaves you a stick of chalk and a note: the ladders have forgotten their letters. Start on the bottom rung, change a single letter at a time, and make each step a real English term until you reach the brass plaque above. A floor plan of the building follows. Entrance hall A wooden wheel with a brass rim is the main menu. Turn it with a finger and tap a medallion, or press the brass hub to carry on with the story. Reading room Tap a tile on the highest rung, then a letter from the tray below. Each finished rung is chalked onto the ladder, with the changed letter underlined in brass. Wipe Rung takes a step back and Ask the Porter whispers the next move. The upper floors The story runs through 8 chapters of 5 ladders each, 40 in all, from three-letter puzzles to long ones with par 8: The Night Porter, The Atlas Shelves, The Clock Gallery, The Bindery, The Whispering Stair, The Observatory, The Locked Archive and Morning Light. Each chapter opens with stars and a short tale. Matching par gives three stars, two extra steps give two and anything longer gives one. The race gallery Three rivals take the same ladder on their own clocks: Owl at 6 seconds per rung, Fox at 4.5 and Raven at 3.2. Their current answer and progress show above yours. Reach the plaque first to finish ahead. The chalk box Six chalk colours, such as Lamp Yellow and Ember Orange, and four ladders, from Library Oak to Brass-bound, open with stars, chapters and races. The records office Stars of 120 on the story ladders, ladders finished, rungs chalked, chapters open, races finished first, porter whispers, your biggest race lead and a four-week activity chart. The basement Chalk dust drifts slowly over the slate behind the menus. This animated background can be switched off in Settings, beside haptics and a progress reset. The game is silent, plays offline and needs no account.
