Painting from reference? See what's off: camera overlay, grid, notan value study
Grisaille is in early access: install it now, and every feature you get during early access stays free for you, forever, even if paid features are added later.
Painting from a reference photo and something looks off? Point your phone at your canvas and see your reference right on top of it, live. Fade it in and out to spot what's wrong with proportions, placement and values before it's too late to fix.
It's a camera overlay made for painters. Use any reference: a photo you took, an art reference you saved, a pose from your favorite reference app. Portraits, figures, animals, still lifes, landscapes.
Made by an artist, for artists. Grisaille is a small, practical tool that stays out of your way while you paint: it opens straight to the camera, with a handful of tools that each do one job.
OVERLAY YOUR REFERENCE
• Lay your reference photo over the live camera view of your canvas or paper
• Adjust the opacity, then move, scale and lock the photo in place
• Freeze the camera frame to compare in peace, without holding the phone still
• Swap the layers to see your painting on top of the reference
SEE THE VALUES
• Turn your reference into a value study: smooth grayscale, notan (two values), 3 or 5 values, or your own custom levels
• Move the shadow cutoff to decide where light ends and shadow begins
• Check your values against your work in progress, not just against the photo
DRAWING GRID
• Overlay a drawing grid on your reference and your canvas to compare one section at a time
• Choose the grid that fits your work
EDGES AND MORE
• Show the edges of your reference, or of the frozen camera frame of your painting, to compare shapes and contours
• Mirror the image to see your painting with fresh eyes, an old studio trick for catching mistakes
FOR ANY MEDIUM
For oil, acrylic, watercolor and gouache, and for drawing in graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, pastel or ink: from the first lay-in to the final values. Works on small sketches as well as large canvases and murals.
PRIVATE AND OFFLINE
• Works fully offline, no internet connection needed
• No account, no sign-up
• Your pictures never leave your phone: all processing happens on the device, and nothing is uploaded or shared
