Foolent Derarn

A cast bell does not sound one note 📝. It sounds five at once — hum, prime, tierce, quint and nominal — and whether it rings sweet or sour depends on where those five stand in relation to one another. Foolent Derarn shows you that relation and what to do about it. Hang a bell by its form, lip diameter, soundbow thickness, height, alloy and the nominal you heard; Foolent Derarn derives the spectrum from that metal and lays it over the true-harmonic ideal as five graduated rails, each carrying its deviation in cents and a lit tolerance window set to whatever standard you work to. Nothing is listened for — there is no microphone in Foolent Derarn and no recording of any kind, because a founder works from measured metal rather than from a needle chasing a played note. Then comes the part that is the actual craft: in the Shave Studio you set a metal depth into any of the five internal tuning zones and watch 👀 the after-spectrum move live, ghosted over the before — the lip flattening the nominal, the waist flattening the tierce, one partial traded off another until the whole set comes true. What falls out is an ordered cut plan 🗺️ of lathe passes, each with its zone, its depth and the tool 🛠️ it wants, ticked off as you take them, and a signed docket kept in Foolent Derarn's archive with the before and after tables standing behind it. What you can do: hang a bell of your own beside the twelve on the peal board, photograph its inside wall and pin the five tuning zones onto that shot, work the zones until the partials come true, plan 🗺️ the passes, and keep the record of every bell you bring to true.
