Description

Play distance cards to hop a frog stone by stone across the river

A river, a scattering of stones, and a frog that cannot swim. In this game you hold three carved stone cards, each one marked with a hop distance, and you play them one at a time to move the frog from stone to stone until it reaches the far bank. Every card you play is replaced by a fresh one drawn from the deck, so your hand is never quite the same twice. The central rule is exactness. The frog must land precisely on a stone — no overshooting, no settling for close enough. A card worth four hops is only useful if there is a stone exactly four hops away, which means the real work is not jumping but reading the water ahead of you. You look at the three distances in your hand, you look at the stones in front of you, and you work out which order turns an awkward hand into a clean route. Play the wrong card first and a perfectly crossable river becomes a dead end with the frog stranded mid-stream. The deck is your clock. There is no timer and nothing chasing you, but every hop costs a card, and the frog must stand on the far bank before the deck runs out. That makes a short detour a genuine expense and turns each crossing into a small puzzle of arithmetic and patience. Take your time; the stones are not going anywhere until you ask them to. Fifteen rivers carry you from gentle, generous crossings to water that asks a great deal more. The gaps grow wider. Backward cards appear, which sound like a waste until you realise a step in the wrong direction is sometimes the only way to line up the step you need. Wild cards hand you freedom and the burden of choosing well. And cracked stones sink the moment the frog leaves them, so a path you have already walked may not be there to walk again — if you need to come back, you had better not have broken the way home. It is a quiet, thoughtful game with a simple grammar: three cards, one frog, one river at a time. The pleasure is in that moment when a hand that looked hopeless rearranges itself in your head, the order becomes obvious, and the frog walks across the water as though the stones had been placed for it all along.
