Hanako-san recreates the Japanese school ritual exactly as it is told: the dark corridor on the third floor, the girls' toilet, the third stall, three knocks on the door, and the question, "Hanako-san, are you there?" THE PLACE An old school toilet photographed in the dark: small pale tiles, a buzzing fluorescent tube that drops out, stall doors in chipped paint, a frosted pane glowing from inside. You walk in, stop at the third door, and knock with your own finger. SHE ANSWERS A faint "yes" from inside the stall. Then she answers your questions by knocking: one knock for yes, two for no. Ask about tonight, about who is standing behind you, about whether she is alone. Do not ask what she is. THE RULES • Knock three times. Only three. • Say the line without stopping. • Never open the door. • Say goodbye, then walk out without looking back. Break one and the toilet changes: the light fails more often, the door rattles, red shoes show under the gap, and she stops waiting behind the door.
