Zoom into space photos from Hubble, Webb and ESO, down to the original pixels.
Space photos usually reach us shrunk down to fit a screen. StarSkopia goes the other way: it downloads the original files from the Hubble Space Telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope, and ESO, just as they were published, and lets you keep zooming until you reach the actual pixels.
🌌 A hand-picked collection of cosmic masterpieces
Landmark astronomy images, chosen one by one. The Pillars of Creation, the Crab Nebula, the Whirlpool Galaxy M51, the Cosmic Cliffs, the Helix Nebula, Stephan's Quintet — classics of space photography, each one in its full-resolution file. We plan to keep refining and expanding the collection.
🔍 Zoom all the way to the original pixels
You are working with the original pixels, not a downscaled preview. The app never upscales beyond the file's own resolution, so the detail you see when you magnify is genuinely in the image, not invented by the zoom. Only the part of the picture on screen gets decoded, so even enormous files pan and zoom smoothly.
📍 Tap a pin to learn what you are looking at
Pins are scattered across each photograph. Where new stars are igniting, which side of a gas cloud is closer to us, which element each color represents. Every note is based on official material from the institution that released the image, and each one lists its source. These are not just pretty pictures — the longer you look, the deeper they get.
☀️ A Today tab that changes as the universe does
Open the app and the Today tab is waiting: the Sun as NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory sees it right now in several wavelengths, today's Earth from the EPIC camera 1.5 million kilometers away, and newly released images from the observatories. A small reminder, every time you open the app, that the universe never stands still.
🌐 In your own language
The interface, the artwork descriptions, and every story pin are written natively in English, Korean, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Spanish — not machine-translated.
🖼️ Turn any view into a wallpaper
Save any image to your gallery and set it as your lock screen or home screen wallpaper from there. If you have been hunting for high-resolution space wallpapers, it is hard to beat the original files.
🔔 A quiet morning notification
If you want it, a morning notification brings you a picture to start the day. It is generated entirely on your device, never passes through an outside server, and can be turned off at any time.
📥 Data saver, and offline once downloaded
You can restrict downloads to Wi-Fi. Anything already downloaded opens with no connection at all, you can review or clear your downloads whenever you like, and when space runs low the oldest ones are cleaned up first, automatically.
🔒 No account, no ads, no tracking
Nothing to sign up for, nothing to log in to. No ads, no analytics, and no developer server anywhere in the chain — so your data simply has no way to reach us. Your settings and image cache stay on your device.
✨ Credits and acknowledgements
Every image and data feed is publicly released material from NASA, ESA (the European Space Agency), and ESO (the European Southern Observatory). Inside the app, every photograph is shown with its full credit line, exactly as the source issued it. This app exists because those institutions imaged the sky and released the results to everyone.
StarSkopia is an independent app and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by NASA, ESA, or ESO. Their names are used solely to identify the source of the material.
