Pomodoro-style focus timer: 24 minutes of work, 6 of rest. Tasks and reports.
Ghatika is a calm Pomodoro-style focus timer for work and study. Begin a round, and a copper bowl fills slowly on a still pond while you work. When it is full, a soft bell tells you, with the phone locked too. Then rest for a few minutes, and begin again.
A ghatika is the old Indian measure of 24 minutes: a copper bowl with a small hole, floating on water, that fills and sinks when its time is up. Ghatika keeps that rhythm: 24 minutes of focus and 6 of rest.
ROUNDS THAT SUIT THE WORK
• 24 : 6, one ghatika, the length it opens on
• 48 : 12, two ghatikas, for deeper work
• 25 : 5, the classic Pomodoro, and 50 : 10, a long round
• Flow: count up, and stop when the focus breaks; the break is worked out from how long you worked
• Custom: your own lengths
• A longer break after a number of rounds, if you like
• When the time is up, wait and count the extra time, or let the break begin by itself; when the break ends, wait, or let the next round begin by itself
THE BELL, WITH THE PHONE LOCKED
• The Android app rings the bell itself, with Ghatika closed and the screen locked
• A notification shows the time left, with Pause and Skip
• Four bells: singing bowl, small bell, tingsha and temple bell, at the volume you choose
• A soft bell a few minutes before the end, if you like
• A gentle vibration with the bell, and Do Not Disturb during a round, if you choose
• No bell during a phone call
A QUIET PLACE TO WORK
• A soft tick during a round, and background sound if you like: rain, tanpura, temple bells far away, forest or a quiet room
• The screen kept on during a round, and Ghatika's own brightness while it is open
• Light and dark, and text that can be made larger
TASKS AND MARKS
• Write what a round is for before you begin
• Tasks with an estimate in rounds, grouped by subject, counted as you work
• Mark a stray thought or a call with one tap, without stopping
• After a round, note how it went, if you wish
REPORTS
• The time you focused each day, by subject, and the days in a row
• Your interruptions, and the hours of the day you work best
• Every round kept, with what it was for
ON YOUR PHONE
• A Quick Settings tile and a home-screen widget: begin a round in one tap, and see the time left
• Long press the icon to begin a round, open your tasks, or return to the round under way
• It opens again where you left off, and Back never interrupts a round
YOUR WORK IS YOURS
• Works fully offline. No account is needed
• Continue with Google, or sign in with your email, if you wish, to keep your rounds safe and the same on your phone and computer
• Save a copy of everything in one file, or download your rounds as a spreadsheet, at any time
• Nothing is sold
