Anime folk horror from Japanese legend. Two lost kids, one warm window.
A dark anime-style horror comic inspired by Japanese folklore, told in 36 full-screen illustrated panels. Tap to turn the page.
Fog rolls down the mountain. Fourteen-year-old Mio and her little brother Kenta have taken the wrong fork on the way to their grandmother's house, and the light is failing.
Then they smell it: warm bread, sweet bean paste, a real fire. Between two black pines stands a little thatched hut with a single glowing window, and a kind old woman who invites them in.
The food is wonderful. The beds are soft. The games last all night. Stay a little longer, she says. Time is gentle when you are safe.
But the sunlight never seems to move, the pies never go stale, and Mio cannot remember how many days have passed.
Yamauba: The Warm Window draws on the old Japanese tales of the yamauba, the mountain witch who waits in lonely places. It is quiet, unsettling and atmospheric rather than gory: the horror is in what you notice, not what you see.
