Swap stones in a gold pan and let the gold sink down Minas Gerais rivers.
Bateia Garimpo is a match-3 puzzle game set in the gold rivers of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Your board is a wooden gold pan, a bateia, filled with sand, gravel, quartz and black iron sand. Swap two neighboring stones to make a line of three or more of the same kind. Matched waste washes out over the rim, and the heavy gold flakes and nuggets sink one row at a time, the way real gold settles in a pan, until they reach the bottom and are yours. You never match the gold itself; you clear the way beneath it. That one twist turns every board into a question of what to wash out first, and it is the heart of Bateia Garimpo.
Each level is a real stretch of river: the sand bars below Sabará on the Rio das Velhas, the Tripuí creek where Ouro Preto's black gold was first washed in 1698, and the diamond gravels around old Tijuco, now Diamantina. Every stretch has its own mix of stones, its own clay crust and its own current. The current drags whole rows sideways on a fixed rhythm, gold included, so a flake sitting in a good column now may be carried off a few moves later; you learn to read the water and plan around it. Seu Tião, an old garimpeiro who knows these rivers by heart, sets the target for each stretch and talks you through the water before you start. Before each stretch you pick one tool to take along: a shovel, extra water or a fine sieve. The gold you bring home goes into your logbook, weighed in grams and priced at the day's real gold price, so every good pan feels like a real find. Come back for the daily river, a new stretch every day where gold counts 25% more, and watch your garimpeiro license climb from Aprendiz de bateia all the way to Bamburrado, the old miners' word for someone who has struck it rich.
