Point your camera at anything and What Color Is This? tells you the color — in giant text on screen and out loud. It is built for anyone who needs a straight answer about a color: color-blind users checking a wire, a shirt or a pill; anyone matching paint, thread or fabric; and anyone who just wants the hex code off a real-world object. HOW IT WORKS • Aim the reticle at whatever you want to read • The color name appears instantly in large, high-contrast text • It is spoken aloud automatically — turn that off and tap to hear it instead • Lock a reading to hold it while you move the phone away WHAT EVERY READING GIVES YOU • A precise name, from a table of 192 colors — Crimson, Fire Brick, Teal, Ruby • The basic color family it belongs to. When you need to pick the right wire or the right pill, "red" is the part that matters, so it is always there • The hex code, tap to copy • RGB and LRV, for paint and print work • A match distance, so you can see how close the named color really is BUILT FOR ACCESSIBILITY Big type and high contrast throughout. Spoken color names, with a choice of brief or detailed wording and adjustable speaking speed. Optional haptic feedback on every reading. The screen stays awake while you hold the phone up against a wall. Also included: a torch toggle for reading colors in poor light, and somewhere to keep the colors you find — save the ones you want to come back to, and build up a working palette as you go. PRIVATE BY DESIGN The camera is a viewfinder and nothing else. There is no shutter button and no capture, save or share feature anywhere in the app, so no photo or video is ever produced, stored or uploaded. Frames are read on your device, in the moment, only to work out the color at the centre of the screen, and are then discarded. The camera is opened with audio switched off, so the app never listens to your microphone. A NOTE ON ACCURACY Your phone's camera and the light around you both affect what the sensor sees. For the closest match, light the surface evenly and fill the reticle with it. This is a practical guide, not a calibrated colorimeter — please don't rely on it where an exact color is critical.
