Metronome: Tap Tempo & Trainer

A metronome with a steady click from 20 to 300 BPM. Pick a time signature and press Start. The downbeat sounds higher, so you always hear where a bar begins. Set the tempo whichever way suits you. The plus and minus buttons move it one BPM at a time, the slider covers the whole range, and a long press on the number lets you type the tempo printed on your score. To match a song, press Tap in time with the music. Two taps are enough. It plays one bar and stays silent for the next while the count goes on. You hold the pulse without help, and when the sound comes back you hear straight away if you rushed or dragged. The dots keep moving through the silence, so you can check yourself by eye as well. Each click is timed from the moment the count starts, not from the one before it. Small delays do not add up, so the tempo does not drift over a long piece. The app also measures its own timing on your phone. After a hundred bars, the ‘About the instrument’ panel shows the average deviation in milliseconds and the name of the phone it was measured on. On a Samsung Galaxy S21 it came to 1.1 ms per beat over 124 bars. Use it to practise guitar, piano, drums, violin or singing, or as a simple click track at band rehearsal. Good to know Wireless headphones play the sound later than the phone speaker, and the app does not measure that delay. On stage, use the speaker or a wired output. The metronome plays only while it is on screen. If you switch to another app or lock the phone, it stops. The ‘About the instrument’ panel also explains 5/4 and 12/8, but only 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and 6/8 can be played. The app has no internet permission. It needs no account and works in aeroplane mode. New look: the tempo large between round − and + keys, the beats of the bar as capsules that light up in turn, and Start as the one filled button at the bottom. Info and settings are icons in the top bar, and button labels are no longer in capitals.
