Live Halloween talk show, 1986. The higher the ratings, the stranger the guests.
October 31, 1986. 11 p.m.
Frankie's Late Night Salon is about to be cancelled, and it is betting everything on a live Halloween special. Whatever happens, the cameras keep rolling.
DEAD AIR is a horror roguelite where you host a live talk show and interview its guests. The harder your questions, the higher the ratings climb. Something inside the guest wakes up too.
■ Ratings or a broadcast incident
Each turn you pick a cue card and ask its question. The more possessed the guest, the more ratings the same question earns. Push past the limit and it's a broadcast incident. How far you go is up to you.
■ A different guest every night
A medium, a debunker, a parapsychologist, an exorcist, a heavy metal singer, a late night horror host, and the only survivor of a fire. The same question gets a different answer depending on the guest's state, and each of them comes apart in their own way.
■ Straight off an 80s TV screen
Scan lines, tracking noise, lower-third captions, the test card. The whole game is a broadcast on a worn-out videotape, and the picture breaks down as the mood gets worse.
■ Live TV has a lot of variables
Lights that suddenly go out, viewer calls coming in, a studio audience you can't even hear breathing, a Camera Four that doesn't exist. Audience interviews, numbers from the house band and commercials that are slightly off all play out on screen.
■ 3D graphics from back then
Chunky polygons and rough pixels. Animal guests who look like they walked out of an old game console sit across the table from you. And sometimes someone is standing behind them.
If every sponsor pulls out, the show goes off the air. Good night.
