WHAT YOU DO
You stand on the bridge of a ship at night, looking out through the wheelhouse window over the foredeck. A vessel appears on the bow showing her navigation lights - masthead lights, sidelights, sternlight, and the all-round lights of her special status. You study her and choose, from four answers, what vessel and situation the lights show. The app tells you whether you were right, marks the correct answer, and explains the identification with the Rule that governs it. Then the next ship comes.
Each round is twenty ships, drawn afresh from seventy-nine night scenarios, so no two rounds are the same. Your score is shown throughout.
WHAT IT TEACHES
- Power-driven vessels under way, of every length class, from ahead, from the beam and from astern
- Towing and pushing: tows under and over 200 metres, composite units, inconspicuous tows
- Vessels not under command, restricted in their ability to manoeuvre, constrained by their draught
- Fishing vessels trawling and fishing other than trawling, making way and stopped, with outlying gear
- Sailing vessels, including the optional red over green and the tricolour lantern
- Pilot vessels, vessels at anchor and aground, mine clearance, air-cushion craft and WIG craft
- Which sidelight you can see and what that tells you about her heading and your obligations
HOW THE LIGHTS BEHAVE
The lights are three-dimensional and obey Rule 21: a sidelight shows only over its 112.5 degree arc, a masthead light over 225 degrees, a sternlight over 135 degrees, and all-round lights all round. Change your point of view and the lights you can see change with it, exactly as they do at sea. The ship rolls and pitches gently in a swell; the sea is lit by the moon.
