This game puts a single rowing shell on open water and hands you the whole stroke. You row with one finger. Drag down the water and that drag becomes the pull of the oars: the further you drag, the more power goes into the stroke. Tilt the same drag to one side and the shell answers, leaning its nose across the current. Length and slant are the only two things you control, and between them sits every line you will ever row. The lane is marked by buoy lines, and your job is to stay between them. That sounds simple on flat water and stops being simple almost immediately. Crosswind pushes at the hull while you are mid-stroke, so a pull that would have run dead straight finishes a metre wide. Lanes bend, and a bend has to be read before you reach it — a long, slanted stroke taken early carries you round the curve, while the same stroke taken late throws you into the buoys. Learning to feel that timing is the heart of the game. Above all of it runs the clock. You have to cross the finish before time runs out, which means you cannot simply inch along the centre of the lane taking tiny, safe, perfectly aimed strokes. Power costs you accuracy and accuracy costs you seconds, and every course asks you to settle that trade somewhere different. Some stretches reward one enormous committed pull. Others want a rhythm of short corrections, feathering the slant a little each time to hold your line while the wind leans on you. There are thirteen courses in all, and they build on each other rather than simply growing longer. Early water lets you get the feel of how much drag equals how much speed, and how a small slant translates into a wide drift by the time the shell has run out its glide. Later water narrows the buoy lines, stacks bends in quick succession and sets the wind against the direction you most want to go. By then you are no longer thinking about your finger at all — you are thinking a stroke and a half ahead, picking the moment to commit. It is a quiet sort of challenge. No buttons, no on-screen controls crowding the water, just the shell, the lane, the wind and the stopwatch. Restart a course and you will usually know exactly which stroke lost you the run, which is the best reason there is to try it again. Find your rhythm, hold your line and row it clean.
