Inside an open watch movement, a quartz prism sparks far too fast to be useful. Your job is to slow it down — not with a switch, but with brass. Each wheel you add takes the spark coming into it and divides it again, so the pulse passes from stage to stage and arrives at the dial slower every time. The early movements give you two stages to work with and a comfortable spread of wheels to choose from. That comfort does not last. Trains stretch to three stages and then four, and as they grow the supply shrinks until it holds little more than what the solution actually requires — every wheel on the bench is there for a reason, and spending one in the wrong place means the rest no longer reach the target. Reading the supply becomes as much a part of the puzzle as reading the dial. Then the movement itself starts working against you. Cracked pegs cannot hold a wheel, so a straight run down the plate becomes a detour around the damage, and you find yourself routing the train through corners of the frame you had been ignoring. Certain targets refuse to come out of any direct chain at all; those need an idler wheel, placed purely to carry motion across a gap without changing the ratio. Learning when a stage is doing arithmetic and when it is simply bridging distance is the quiet turning point of the whole thing. Fifteen movements wait on the bench, each one a small closed problem with a single clean answer. There is no clock pressing you and no penalty for taking a wheel back off its peg. Sit with the plate, trace the path the spark will take, and set the gears until the carved number on the dial is exactly what your train delivers.
