Oxbera Quest

A narrow cart road winds along the high moors, and at the end of it a market yard waits. Your finger rests on the ox. You drag, and the ox goes where you ask. The timber wagon hitched behind it does not. That is the whole puzzle. A towed wagon never follows the line you have just travelled — it pivots, cuts the inside of every bend, and arrives somewhere you did not intend. So the thing you steer and the thing you must keep safe are two different objects, and the second one lags half a breath behind your decisions. Clear a pair of stone gateposts with the ox and the wagon may still clip the stone, because by the time the wheels reach the gap the whole rig has turned. So you learn to drive for the back wheels instead of the front. You take corners wide and early, giving the wagon room to swing through the slack. You ease off before a gate rather than after it, because a late correction only whips the load further off line. You watch the crumbling verge at the road's edge, where the surface gives way and a wheel that drifts out has nowhere to go. Twenty-five stretches of highland road, each one a small lesson in thinking one length behind yourself. The pleasure here is the pleasure of handling something awkward well. Early on the wagon feels like an opponent — it lunges at gateposts you were sure you had cleared, it hangs off the verge while the ox stands placidly on firm ground. Then the geometry starts to make sense. You begin to read a bend before you reach it and to feel, without measuring, how much road the swing is going to eat. The same corner that cost you five attempts becomes one smooth unbroken drag, and the satisfaction of that is out of all proportion to the size of the move. There is no timer pushing at your elbow. A winding mountain road rewards patience: slow, deliberate dragging gets the wagon through gaps that no amount of hurry will manage. Stop halfway along a pass if you like, study the next pair of posts, work out which side to approach from, and only then commit. It ends the only way it can. The ox walks into the market yard, the timber wagon tracks in neatly behind it, and both sets of back wheels come to rest inside the gate. Then the road climbs again, the next set of gateposts narrows, and you begin reading the corners afresh.
