Chicken Road: parse METAR reports to check solo flight limits.
Chicken Road is a tool for student pilots to evaluate METAR reports against specific flight limits. It helps you determine if conditions are safe for solo training by analyzing wind and visibility data.
Paste any current METAR report, and the app draws the wind vector on the active runway. It calculates the steady and gusting headwind and crosswind components on the end of the runway that provides the most headwind. The wind direction is automatically adjusted from true to magnetic based on the airport location.
The interface clearly displays wind speeds in knots against your personal logbook limits. If a gust reaches 20 knots or the crosswind component hits 8 knots, the app marks the value as "on your limit." This prevents rounding errors that might make conditions appear safer than they really are.
Visibility and ceiling data are also checked against standard limits of 5 statute miles and 3,000 feet. The app shows the resulting flight category next to these values for quick reference. You can tap any part of the decoded code to read it in plain English, covering everything from the report type to weather trends.
The calculation logic follows the FAA crosswind component chart, while the code parsing adheres to WMO-No. 306 standards. A single-page briefing summarizes all limits and conditions, making it easy to share with your instructor before deciding on the flight.
All processing happens locally, and your briefing data remains private on your device. With Chicken Road, you have a reliable offline companion for pre-flight checks with no accounts or cloud sync required.
