Pipa na Laje is a kite-fighting game set on the flat concrete rooftops of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Your paper pipa is already up on its line over Morro da Providência on a windy July afternoon, with the city spread out below, washing hanging on the next laje and rivals watching from the rooftops around you. A pipa flies the way real fighter kites do. Hold the line and it shoots where its nose points; give it slack and the nose spins while the kite drifts on the wind. Cross a rival's line while yours is moving and theirs gives way. Then chase the loose kite across the rooftops and catch its trailing line before it lands. Every kite you catch goes on your varal, the clothesline on your laje. Eight rivals fly from four lajes around you, each with a kite and a habit of their own. The wind in Pipa na Laje comes from the real sky. Each morro reads its live wind from Open-Meteo, so a gusty day in the city is a gusty afternoon on the rooftops. Afternoons run from 15:00 until dusk: the wind shifts, stray kites drift in from other neighbourhoods and the city lights come on one by one. Every afternoon is logged, so you can come back for a rematch with the rival who cut you and build a winter streak. Between afternoons there is the workshop. Pick the tissue colours, choose one of four shapes and one of three tail lengths, and feel the difference on the line the next time you fly. You can also print a photo on the tissue, taken with the camera or picked from your gallery, so the kite you send up in Pipa na Laje is really yours.
