Kyykka Square

Kyykka Square is a turn-based throwing game about kyykkä, the Karelian skittles game that Finnish students and village clubs play on a square of sand marked out on the ground. The sport is centuries old, and on summer evenings it still fills university yards and village fields across Finland. It is quick to pick up and slow to master, because every throw changes what is left in front of you. Drag back to set the power and angle, let go, and a birch baton spins down the pitch into a line of wooden pins. Pins knocked out of the square are gone. Pins left lying on a line become akka: they are stood back up and still have to go. Every match is you against a village team, four batons a side per round, and the side that clears its square in the fewest throws wins. Each team has habits you can read: the old Joensuu pair always throw low and flat, while the student team from Helsinki over-spins every baton. Watch how they play, then answer with a line of your own. The wind at each pitch comes from the real local forecast, so a lobbed baton drifts on a breezy evening and a still morning rewards a high, patient throw. Akka pins make the late throws tense: a pin you only nudged onto the line comes back standing, so a careful slide often beats a hard hit.
