The Midnight Game: Ritual

Write your name. One drop of blood. A candle lit on the stroke of midnight, twenty-two knocks on a wooden door, and three and a half hours in the dark. The Midnight Game is the legend, played straight. The app runs on your phone's real clock: the door opens at 23:00, the last knock must fall at exactly 00:00, and nothing ends before 3:33. The candle on your screen is your candle. It leans when you tilt the phone, bends in a draught, and goes out when you blow on it. If it dies, you have ten seconds to strike the match. If you can't, pour the salt and close the circle with your finger. THE RITUAL, AS IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN TOLD • Before midnight: your full name on paper, a drop of blood, the paper before a wooden door, every light in the house off. • At midnight: 22 knocks with the last on the stroke of midnight (the app counts and keeps the beat), light the candle, open the door, blow it out, relight it. He is in the house. • Until 3:33: keep the flame alive. Never let it stay out longer than ten seconds. Salt circle if you must. Do not turn on the lights. THE NIGHT • Signs that he is close, growing through the night: the house settling, whispers from one side, your own name in the dark, knocks like the ones you made, footsteps in the hall, a sudden cold, breathing at your ear, a figure in the doorway.
