Change one letter. Keep every word real. A calm vocabulary puzzle set like a printed book, in black ink on warm paper with a single vermilion accent. Climb from a start word to an end word one letter at a time, and every rung on the way has to be a real word from the book's own hand-picked dictionary. Its contents run as follows. Foreword Tap a letter of the current rung, then a key on the typewriter-style keyboard. The changed character in each rung is marked in red italics. Undo, Hint and Restart sit above the keys, and a hint whispers the next step on the shortest route. Part Ⅰ · Short words The book opens with three-letter climbs that take just a few steps. Parts Ⅱ to Ⅳ · Steady going to The long climb Four-letter words and longer routes, all the way to par 8. In all there are 48 puzzles in four parts, listed in a table of contents with dotted leaders. Each opens after the one before. Asterisks in the margin Par is the shortest possible route. Matching it gives three asterisks, two extra steps give two, and a longer route gives one. Today's edition One daily puzzle with par 4 to 7, the same for every reader on that date, with a day streak. Appendix · Word origins A quiz on English etymology: 10 questions per round from 26 real facts, each with a footnote, such as where salary, quarantine and ketchup came from. Ledger and marks The ledger counts puzzles cleared, stars, climbs set at par, streak, steps written, average over par, a chart of clears by par and recent entries. Twelve marks in the margin, from First rung to Morning edition, note the milestones. Colophon Pale serif letters float slowly across the paper behind the pages.
