Every square you fill shows up in a monthly and yearly grid, so a glance tells you how the month is going. One square a day is the whole method: you fill in what you did, and the grid does the rest. The app asks for the notification permission only if you want reminders, and it works exactly the same if you decline. It never asks to draw over other apps, read your contacts, or see your location.
