A young gull leaves the rock where she hatched and flies the shoreline on a sea chart drawn on old paper. Below is her entry in the field guide. Species A small white gull, drawn in ink. The voyage chart winds through 30 numbered legs, from Gull Rock and Saltmarsh Bay past Old Pier, Lighthouse Point and Seal Skerries to Storm Shoals, Puffin Isle and Far Harbour. Diet Silver sprats, snapped up in mid-air. Each leg gives up to three stars for the sprats caught, and a rope with a buoy along the bottom shows how far the leg has gone. Behaviour Posts rise in steps like a stair of air, gaps drift up and down with the rocking buoys, and later the cliffs crowd close. Every cleared leg is stamped with a wax seal on a postcard of results: sprats caught, stacks passed and the course flown.
