Pick symptoms to see how urgent it is and which department to visit in Japan
※This app is for use in Japan. 119 (ambulance) and #7119 (medical advice line) are Japanese phone numbers and do not work outside Japan.
Feeling unwell in Japan and not sure whether to go to a hospital right away or wait and see?
"Hospital Visit Symptom Checker" is a free app that shows you, on the spot, how urgently you should seek care and which medical department is likely to be suitable — just by tapping the symptoms that apply to you.
■ Main features
• Simple check by choosing symptoms
Choose from 18 symptom categories such as chest pain, fever, headache and dizziness. After selecting when the symptoms started, how strong they are and how they are changing, the app shows one of 4 urgency levels (call an ambulance now / see a doctor as soon as possible / see a doctor / keep monitoring) and the medical department that fits (20 departments, such as cardiology, neurosurgery and ENT).
• Available in 6 languages
Japanese, English, Chinese, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Portuguese. Even if you are not confident about seeing a doctor in Japan, you can check everything in your own language.
• For medical staff (phrases to show)
Your symptoms are shown as Japanese sentences on the screen and can be read aloud. If explaining in Japanese is difficult, just show the screen to the staff. Common reception phrases such as "This is my first visit" and "I have my health insurance card" are also included.
• Save your visit information
Save the symptoms and urgency you selected in the app and check them again later.
• Emergency contacts
See emergency contacts in one place, such as 119 (ambulance), #7119 (emergency medical consultation; availability depends on the region) and mental health helplines.
• Find nearby medical facilities
Search for medical facilities near you with Google Maps.
■ Recommended for
• When you suddenly feel unwell and are unsure whether to go to a hospital
• When you don't know which department to visit
• Foreign residents who are worried about explaining symptoms in Japanese
• When you are worried about the health of your family or children
■ Please note
This app does not replace a doctor's diagnosis. The urgency and the suggested department are only a guide. If you have serious symptoms, do not hesitate to call 119 or see a medical facility.
