Lateral & Special Marks Quiz is an educational trainer and quiz covering IALA buoyage for maritime students, deck officer cadets and nautical professionals, developed by a Master Mariner and maritime lecturer. The app covers both IALA regions. Region A and Region B lateral marks are treated side by side, so you learn not just the shapes, colours and light characteristics but also how port and starboard hand marks reverse between the two systems, the distinction that catches out candidates in examinations and matters at sea. Special marks, which remain consistent worldwide, are covered in full alongside them. Use the trainer to study each mark, its colour, shape, topmark and light rhythm, then switch to the quiz to test yourself under pressure. Questions draw on the full set of lateral and special marks across both regions, ideal for drilling the differences until they are second nature.
