Sportium

Sportium is a vocabulary app that elevates flashcard study from passive recognition to active testing through its quiz mode, which challenges you to choose the correct answer from four options before revealing whether you were right. The difference between study mode and quiz mode is cognitive depth: in study mode, you see the answer after flipping and self-assess. In quiz mode, you must recall and select the answer before any confirmation, a fundamentally more demanding mental exercise. Research consistently shows that active retrieval practice, trying to produce or select an answer before seeing it, leads to stronger long-term retention than passive review. Sportium's quiz mode puts this principle into practice with every question. The visual feedback system reinforces this learning loop: green for correct, red-shake for wrong. The shake animation creates a mild surprise effect when you're incorrect, which neuroscience suggests helps encode the right answer more strongly in memory. Sportium's quiz mode is particularly effective for the Phrasal Verbs and Advanced English decks, where subtle distinctions between options demand careful consideration and reward focused attention.
