It functions as a one-time safety net against the enemies that begin appearing at higher altitudes. Without a shield, any contact with an enemy ends the run immediately. With a shield active, the first enemy contact is absorbed and the character continues climbing. The shield then expires, leaving the player unprotected until another is collected. The shield is most valuable in dense enemy sections at high altitude, where platforms are scarce and there is little room to maneuver around threats. Having it active during those sections allows you to focus on platform-reading rather than enemy avoidance. A visible indicator on the character shows when the shield is active, so you always know your protection status.
